Why the Mau Forest Matters
The Mau Forest is not only home to countless plant and animal species, but it also plays a crucial role in water regulation for major rivers and lakes that millions of people across East Africa depend on. However, deforestation, habitat destruction, and unsustainable land use threaten its future, putting livelihoods and biodiversity at risk.
At FOMAWA, we believe that conservation and community development can go hand in hand. By involving schools, farmers, and local communities in reforestation efforts, we are building a future where both the environment and people thrive.
Our Impact
- Over 320,000 trees planted: Since 2005, we have worked with farmers and schools to restore degraded areas, which has boosted local economies and protected the environment. This high success rate has been due to our consistent follow-up to ensure proper care of the trees after planting to maturity.
- 184 school projects: Our tree planting initiatives help schools generate income and teach students the value of environmental conservation.
- Community-led conservation: We engage and train local communities in sustainable tree-growing techniques, ensuring that future generations inherit a healthy, thriving ecosystem.
